Do Winterbourne homes have asbestos in popcorn ceilings?

Some Winterbourne homes could have asbestos in their popcorn ceilings, but it depends entirely on when the house was built. Chrysotile asbestos was commonly mixed into ceiling texture through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s, so if your Winterbourne home was built before the mid-1980s, testing is the only way to know for sure. Homes built after that period are very unlikely to have asbestos-containing texture.

Under Ontario Regulation 278/05, testing is required before disturbing any suspect ceiling material. Removal itself is not legally mandated, and the Ontario Building Code does not regulate popcorn ceilings directly. We coordinate lab testing at cost, $300 to $500 with no markup, so you get a straight answer before any work starts.

  • Unpainted popcorn ceiling removal: $4.50/sqft, all-inclusive (removal, 2 skim coats, primer, 2 coats of paint)
  • Latex-painted popcorn ceilings: $6.50/sqft, all-inclusive
  • Oil-base painted popcorn ceilings: $7.50/sqft, all-inclusive
