Chrysotile asbestos was commonly mixed into ceiling texture through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s, so if a home's ceilings were textured before the mid-1980s, testing is the only reliable way to know. Homes textured after that period are far less likely to contain it.

Under Ontario Regulation 278/05, any suspect material must be tested before it is disturbed — sanding, scraping, or removing untested popcorn texture is not permitted. Removal itself is not legally mandated, and the Ontario Building Code does not regulate popcorn ceilings — that decision is entirely up to the homeowner.
