how to remove ceiling register

To remove a ceiling register, shut off your HVAC system at the thermostat, then locate the two retaining screws or spring clips holding the vent cover to the duct boot and release them so the register lifts free of the ceiling drywall. Most residential registers either unscrew from the frame or pop out with firm, even pressure once the clips are compressed. If your ceiling has textured popcorn finish, be careful: chrysotile asbestos was commonly mixed into popcorn texture before the mid-1980s, and Ontario Regulation 278/05 requires testing before disturbing any suspect material, even around a register opening. We coordinate asbestos testing at cost, $300 to $500, before any register removal or ceiling work begins. When we remove popcorn ceilings, taking down and reinstalling registers is included in our all-inclusive pricing: $4.50 per square foot for unpainted popcorn, $6.50 for latex-painted, and $7.50 for oil-based painted ceilings. Removal itself isn't legally mandated, but testing first is the safe move. Call us at (519) 729-7394 and we'll handle the register, the texture, and the paperwork.
