• Asbestos testing first: chrysotile asbestos was mixed into ceiling texture through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s, so any pre-1980 or mid-1980s home should be tested before the ceiling is disturbed. Here in Ontario, Regulation 278/05 requires testing before disturbing suspect material. Removal itself is not mandated by law. Testing runs $300 to $500 at cost.
