Is skim coat good for ceilings?
Yes — skim coating is one of the best finishes for ceilings, giving a smooth, modern, high-end look that hides seams and holds paint far better than texture. At KW Popcorn Ceiling Removal & Painting, we apply two skim coats plus primer and two coats of paint as part of our standard popcorn removal service, so the result is a flat, drywall-smooth ceiling ready for any light fixture or paint finish.
- Skim coat during popcorn removal (all-inclusive): $4.50/sqft (unpainted popcorn), $6.50/sqft (latex-painted), $7.50/sqft (oil-based painted)
- Skim coat only (no paint): $2.50/sqft
- Skim coat full service (with paint): $3.50/sqft
- Skim coat applied over existing texture without removal: $8.50/sqft — this is a more labour-intensive process than removal and costs more, not less
If your ceiling texture was applied before the mid-1980s, we recommend asbestos testing ($300–$500, at cost) before any skim coating begins, per Ontario Regulation 278/05. We coordinate testing but don't perform abatement ourselves. Call us at (519) 729-7394 for a free quote. KW Popcorn Ceiling Removal · Google Reviews
