What mud do I use to skim coat a ceiling?

We use a two-coat all-purpose joint compound (drywall mud) system to skim coat ceilings, not a single-mix product. The first coat is applied slightly thinned for better bonding and coverage, then sanded once dry. The second coat is applied at a smoother, tighter consistency to level out texture, trowel marks, and any imperfections left from popcorn ceiling removal. This two-skim-coat process is included in our all-inclusive pricing:

  • Unpainted popcorn ceiling: $4.50/sqft (removal + 2 skim coats + primer + 2 coats paint)
  • Latex-painted ceiling: $6.50/sqft
  • Oil-base painted ceiling: $7.50/sqft

Before any skim coating begins, if your home was built before the mid-1980s, we recommend asbestos testing ($300-$500, at cost, no markup) since chrysotile asbestos was commonly mixed into ceiling texture until then. Ontario Regulation 278/05 requires testing before disturbing suspect material. We coordinate this testing for you. Call us at (519) 729-7394 for a free quote.
