Can I test for asbestos myself?
Technically yes, DIY asbestos test kits are sold online and in hardware stores, but we don't recommend using one on a popcorn ceiling, and most Ontario contractors won't accept the results.
- Why DIY kits are risky: scraping a sample yourself disturbs the material and can release fibers into your air before you even know if it's positive.
- The Ontario rule: under Ontario Regulation 278/05, suspect material must be tested before it's disturbed, and results need to come from an accredited lab, not a home kit.
- Which homes are affected: chrysotile asbestos was commonly mixed into ceiling texture through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s, so anything textured before the mid-1980s should be tested.
- Not mandatory removal: testing is required before disturbance, but the Ontario Building Code doesn't regulate popcorn ceilings, and removal itself isn't legally mandated if the material is left undisturbed.
We coordinate accredited lab testing at cost, $300–$500, no markup, no obligation to hire us after. Call (519) 729-7394 to arrange it. KW Popcorn Ceiling Removal · Kitchener service area · Google Reviews
