Chrysotile asbestos was mixed into ceiling texture through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s, so testing matters most for homes built before the mid-1980s. Under Ontario Regulation 278/05, suspect material must be tested before it is disturbed. The law does not require removal itself, and the Ontario Building Code does not regulate popcorn ceilings.

• Unpainted popcorn ceiling removal: $4.50/sqft all-inclusive (removal, 2 skim coats, primer, 2 coats of paint).
• Latex-painted: $6.50/sqft all-inclusive.
