Water Damage Ceiling Repair in Kitchener-Waterloo

A water-damaged ceiling is one of the most urgent home repair calls — and one of the most common across Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and Guelph. Whether it is a burst pipe, a roof leak, or a bathroom overflow from the floor above, here is what to do and what to expect.

Do This Immediately When You See a Water Stain or Wet Ceiling

  1. Find and stop the water source first — no repair is worth doing until the source is fixed. Call a plumber if needed.
  2. Place buckets under any active drips — protect your flooring and belongings immediately.
  3. If the ceiling is bulging or sagging — there may be water pooled above. Carefully poke a small hole in the lowest point to allow controlled draining rather than a full ceiling collapse.
  4. Do not attempt to scrape, sand, or otherwise disturb a wet ceiling — especially in pre-1980 homes where popcorn texture may contain asbestos.
  5. Call us for a fast assessment — we respond to water damage calls within one business day.

Repair vs. Replace: Water-Damaged Drywall

The decision depends on how long the drywall was wet and its current condition:

  • Wet less than 24–48 hours, no softness or mould: May be salvageable with proper drying. Let dry completely (3–5 days minimum), then assess. Staining can be sealed with shellac primer.
  • Wet more than 48 hours, soft or spongy: Must be replaced. Wet drywall loses structural integrity and will not hold mud or paint.
  • Any visible mould: Must be replaced and framing treated with antimicrobial solution before new drywall is installed.
  • Collapsed or severely sagging: Replace. No repair is feasible on structurally compromised drywall.

Water Damage Repair Costs in KW

Medium area replacement (4–16 sqft)$500–$1,000
Large area / full ceiling section$900–$2,500+
