It was a common finish in Ontario homes built before the mid-1980s, chosen because it was cheap to apply and hid drywall imperfections.

The catch: chrysotile asbestos was mixed into ceiling texture before the mid-1980s, so if your home was built in that window, the material should be tested before anyone disturbs it. Ontario Regulation 278/05 governs handling of asbestos-containing material, and testing is required before removal or sanding, though removal itself is not legally mandated and the Ontario Building Code does not regulate popcorn ceilings directly.
