What should I do to repair my ceiling after removing popcorn ceiling?
After popcorn ceiling removal, the ceiling needs two full skim coats of joint compound to smooth out scraper marks and texture residue, followed by a coat of primer and two coats of paint for a clean, even finish. Skipping the skim coats leaves visible gouges and uneven patches once paint goes on.
We include this entire repair process in our all-inclusive removal pricing, so there is no separate repair bill:
- Unpainted popcorn ceiling: $4.50/sqft (removal, 2 skim coats, primer, 2 coats paint)
- Latex-painted popcorn: $6.50/sqft
- Oil-based painted popcorn: $7.50/sqft
Before any repair work begins, testing is required if the texture was applied before the mid-1980s, since chrysotile asbestos was commonly mixed into ceiling texture up to that point. Ontario Regulation 278/05 requires testing before disturbing suspect material. We coordinate third-party asbestos testing at cost ($300 to $500, no markup) and do not perform abatement ourselves.
