The fastest safe way to remove a popcorn ceiling is to hire a professional crew that contains the dust and finishes the ceiling in one continuous job. DIY scraping usually eats a full weekend, plus days of cleanup, sanding and skim coating.

• Test first: Chrysotile asbestos was mixed into ceiling texture through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s, so homes built before the mid-1980s need testing. Ontario Regulation 278/05 requires testing before suspect material is disturbed. We coordinate testing at cost, $300–$500, with no markup.
• Our pricing: Unpainted popcorn ceilings are $4.50/sqft all-inclusive (removal, 2 skim coats, primer and 2 coats of paint). Latex-painted is $6.50/sqft and oil-base painted is $7.50/sqft.
