Is it better to roll or spray paint a ceiling?

Spraying is the better choice for most ceilings, especially textured or popcorn ceilings, because it lays down an even coat without roller marks or drag lines. Rolling only works well on smooth, flat ceilings or small touch-up areas.

  • Spray: even coverage, no lap lines, best for textured or popcorn ceilings
  • Roll: fine for smooth ceilings, small rooms, or spot repairs

If your ceiling still has popcorn texture, painting over it isn't ideal long term. Our all-inclusive pricing for unpainted popcorn ceilings is $4.50 per square foot, covering removal, two skim coats, primer, and two coats of sprayed paint. Already-painted popcorn runs $6.50 per square foot for latex or $7.50 per square foot for oil-based paint.

Popcorn texture installed before the mid-1980s may contain asbestos, since chrysotile asbestos was mixed into ceiling texture through the 1970s into the mid-1980s. Ontario Regulation 278/05 requires testing before disturbing suspect material. We coordinate asbestos testing at cost, usually $300 to $500. Removal itself isn't legally mandated and the Ontario Building Code doesn't regulate popcorn ceilings, but testing first is the safe move.
