Actual usage depends on the surface: a standard skim coat over drywall uses less material, while skim-coating over existing popcorn texture takes more mud since it has to fill and level an uneven surface rather than a flat one.

If your home was built before the mid-1980s, have any ceiling texture tested for asbestos before sanding or disturbing it. Ontario Regulation 278/05 requires testing before suspect material is disturbed, though removal itself is not mandated by law and the Ontario Building Code does not regulate popcorn ceilings.
