How do I remove acoustic tile from my ceiling?
You can remove acoustic (popcorn) tile or texture from a ceiling, but in Kitchener-Waterloo homes built before the mid-1980s, testing for asbestos should happen first, since chrysotile asbestos was commonly mixed into ceiling texture through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s.
- Testing: Ontario Regulation 278/05 requires testing before disturbing suspect material. We coordinate this testing at cost, $300 to $500, with no markup. Removal itself isn't mandated by law, and the Ontario Building Code doesn't regulate popcorn ceilings, but testing before disturbance is required.
- Unpainted popcorn ceiling: $4.50/sqft all-inclusive, covering removal, two skim coats, primer, and two coats of paint.
- Latex-painted ceiling: $6.50/sqft all-inclusive.
- Oil-base painted ceiling: $7.50/sqft all-inclusive.
