A retail kit only tells you whether a sample contains asbestos; it does not meet the sampling and chain-of-custody standard most accredited labs use, and a false negative from a poorly collected sample can leave you disturbing hazardous material without knowing it.

• Who needs testing: homes with popcorn or stipple ceiling texture applied before the mid-1980s, since chrysotile asbestos was commonly mixed into that texture through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s.
• The law: Ontario Regulation 278/05 requires testing before disturbing suspect material. Removal itself is not mandated by law, and the Ontario Building Code does not regulate popcorn ceilings — testing is about safety before work starts, not a code requirement to remove.
