Do I need to use primer after removing popcorn ceiling?

Yes, primer is required after removing a popcorn ceiling to seal the new skim-coat drywall compound and give you an even, uniform surface so topcoat paint goes on smoothly without flashing or soaking in unevenly. Skipping primer on fresh joint compound leads to blotchy paint, poor adhesion, and visible seams once the ceiling dries.

At KW Popcorn Ceiling Removal & Painting, primer is already built into our all-inclusive pricing, so there's no separate line item to worry about:

  • Unpainted popcorn ceiling: $4.50/sqft (removal, 2 skim coats, primer, and 2 coats of paint)
  • Latex-painted ceiling: $6.50/sqft, all-inclusive
  • Oil-base painted ceiling: $7.50/sqft, all-inclusive

If your home was built before the mid-1980s, we coordinate asbestos testing at cost ($300 to $500) before any work begins, as required under Ontario Regulation 278/05 before disturbing suspect material.
