Do I need to skim coat my ceiling after removing popcorn ceiling?

Yes. Skim coating is a required part of the popcorn ceiling removal process, not an optional upgrade. Once the popcorn texture is scraped off, the drywall underneath is rarely smooth enough for paint on its own, scrape marks, seams, and uneven texture need to be covered with two coats of skim coating and sanded to a smooth, paint-ready finish before priming. That is why our removal pricing is $4.50 per square foot, all-inclusive, and already covers removal, two skim coats, primer, and two coats of paint with no separate add-on charge. If you just want ceilings that are already stripped skim coated, that runs $2.50/sqft for skim coat only or $3.50/sqft for full-service skim coating with sanding and cleanup.

Before any removal or skim coating starts on a home built before the mid-1980s, Ontario Regulation 278/05 requires testing for asbestos-containing material if it may be disturbed, since chrysotile asbestos was commonly mixed into ceiling texture through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s. We coordinate that testing at cost, $300 to $500, no markup.
