Chrysotile asbestos was commonly mixed into ceiling texture through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s, so if your home was built or had its ceilings finished before the mid-1980s, popcorn texture should be treated as suspect until tested. Newer construction is much less likely to contain it, but age alone isn't proof either way.
