Can I put 1/2 inch drywall on a ceiling?
Yes, 1/2 inch drywall can go on a ceiling, but 5/8 inch is the better choice. Half-inch board works when joists are spaced 16 inches on centre. At 24 inches on centre, it tends to sag over time, especially under a heavy skim coat or paint load. Ontario's building code doesn't regulate popcorn ceilings, so this is a matter of good practice rather than a legal requirement.
- Use 5/8 inch for 24-inch joist spacing or any ceiling that will be skim coated.
- Use 1/2 inch only on 16-inch spacing, and use screws rather than nails.
- Test for asbestos first. Chrysotile asbestos was mixed into ceiling texture through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s. Ontario Regulation 278/05 requires testing before you disturb suspect material. We coordinate testing at cost, for $300–$500. Removal itself isn't mandated by law.
Covering a popcorn ceiling with new board is one option. Our all-inclusive removal service costs $4.50/sqft for unpainted texture, $6.50/sqft for latex-painted and $7.50/sqft for oil-base painted. That includes 2 skim coats, primer and 2 coats of paint. A main floor, a few rooms or a condo (400–600 sqft) runs $2,000–$4,500. We're insured for $2M and WSIB covered. Call Eddie at (519) 729-7394.
