Removing popcorn ceiling yourself is possible on a small, low-risk area, but in Ontario homes built before the mid-1980s it comes with a real hazard: chrysotile asbestos was commonly mixed into ceiling texture up until then, and Ontario Regulation 278/05 requires testing before you disturb any suspect material. Scraping dry, untested texture can release fibers into your home's air, which is a health risk that isn't worth the DIY savings.

Removal itself isn't legally mandated, and the Ontario Building Code doesn't regulate popcorn ceilings, so it's your choice whether to remove it at all. If you do proceed on your own, expect a messy, multi-day process: wetting the texture, scraping, patching, sanding, priming, and repainting. DIY also skips the skim-coat step that gives professional jobs a smooth, drywall-quality finish.
