Popcorn Ceiling Removal Before and After in KW Homes
Nothing communicates the value of ceiling removal like seeing the actual before and after transformation. Here is what the process looks like from start to finish in real Kitchener-Waterloo homes.
Day 1: Before
The typical KW home arriving at our starting condition has:
- Original spray-applied popcorn or stucco texture from the 1970s–1990s, often slightly yellowed or discoloured from age
- Possibly painted over once or twice, which has added colour variation and made the texture slightly glossy
- Visible shadows in the texture under any directional light (pot lights, window light)
- A "dated" visual impression that photographs poorly and reads as old in listing photos
Day 1 During: The Removal
After furniture is moved and floors are protected, the ceiling is misted lightly with water to soften the compound. Our scrapers — connected to HEPA-filtered vacuums — remove the texture directly into the vacuum without releasing dust into the room. Within a few hours, the room goes from textured to a bare, slightly rough drywall surface. The transformation at this stage looks rough — uneven scraper marks, exposed paper, a few gouges — but this is intentional. The skim coat phase brings it to finished.
Day 2: Skim Coat
The first coat of joint compound goes on the entire ceiling surface. At this stage the ceiling looks like a fresh canvas — smooth but slightly imperfect. After 8–12 hours of drying, the second coat goes on, filling the remaining low spots and seams from the first coat. By the end of Day 2, the ceiling surface is smooth and flat to the eye.
Day 2–3: Sand, Prime, Paint
After the second skim coat dries overnight, the surface is sanded under raking light to eliminate any remaining imperfections. Bonding primer is applied and allowed to dry. Two coats of Sherwin-Williams ceiling white complete the project. The ceiling at this point is not just smooth — it is bright, clean, and reflective in a way the original textured surface never was.
After: The Result
The rooms feel noticeably larger. Pot lights distribute light evenly without texture shadows. Photographs taken in the room are dramatically brighter. The home reads as modern in listing photos. Buyers walking in for a showing notice immediately — and no longer have a visual anchor that makes them think "old house."
